WILD HORSE
Wild Horse is a children’s rocking horse that speaks to the human’s historic fear of the wild and its parallels to the control we enforce in contemporary child rearing. Breaking a horse is the act of taking a wild horse and training it to perform to an expected set of behaviors. Dominance over what was once wild is akin to a child with free play and autonomy, being managed through activities, toys, and aesthetics to fit the parent’s ideal.
Made from moulded plywood, the rocking horse form is an abstract gesture of an animal that calls to be ridden. A notch cut from the bottom curve disrupts the smooth traditional rocking motion and introduces a bumpy and unexpected gait.
